The Erbil Policy Institute (EPI) is an independent research and think tank based in Ankara. Focusing on Iraq and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq as its primary area of study, EPI aims to conduct in-depth examinations of the region's politics, foreign policy, economy, security, history, and social conditions and transformations. By focusing not only on Erbil-Baghdad relations but also on the relationships that Iraq and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq have developed with regional and international actors—particularly Turkey—the EPI assesses the region from a holistic and broader perspective. EPI conducts interdisciplinary research in the fields of politics, foreign policy, economy, security, history, and society. It aims to understand current developments not merely through their outcomes, but through the historical continuities, institutional structures, and social dynamics that shape them. By combining the analytical tools of international relations with field expertise and historical research, EPI aims to produce academic analyses, reports, expert evaluations, primary source studies, and publications focusing on the social and cultural memory of the region. Independence, the scientific method, and intellectual pluralism form the foundation of EPI’s approach to research. Based in Ankara and named after Erbil, our Institute goes beyond merely studying Iraq and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq from an external perspective; it focuses on understanding and explaining the region within the context of its own political, social, and historical dynamics, while also examining the long-term transformation of Turkey’s ties with the region.
